Intro

Particle physics in Belgium takes place at the universities of Antwerp, Brussels (both Dutch- and French-language universities), Gent, Leuven, Louvain-la-Neuve and Mons, with activities in many experiments. The largest groups are in the CMS-experiment at the LHC and in IceCube, but there is also participation in NA62, JUNO and SoLid. The outreach activities are many and diverse, ranging from Masterclasses to regular lectures for general public. Recently a major effort began to establish Gravitational Waves as a research line in almost every university, with participation in Virgo and the Einstein Telescope Pathfinder projects.

Dirk Ryckbosch

Dirk Ryckbosch started his research career in nuclear and hadronic physics, before switching to particle physics with the HERMES experiment at the HERA-collider in DESY. Between 2001 and 2003 he was spokesperson for the HERMES-experiment. He is a signing member of the IceCube and SoLid-experiments.

In 2000 he was appointed full professor in particle physics at Ghent University, where he established the research group on Experimental Particle Physics. The group of approximately 30 researchers is active in the CMS, IceCube and SoLid experiments. Between 2006 and 2018 he was chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Ghent University.

He has organized Masterclasses on Particle Physics and on IceCube in Gent since 2005, and gave lectures at the "Kinderuniversiteit" (Children's university) on the IceCube neutrino telescope, and life at the South Pole. In 2005 he also organized the activities in Gent for the World Year of Physics: a "Physics Spectacular Show" (safety goggles and ear protection were a must!), and a series of "Saturdays of Physics" lectures for the general public.

Dirk has been Belgium's representative to IPPOG since 2014.
