A Question of Survival

This presentation was given at TEDxTUM 2015 in front of a large public audience and was recorded and published on the TEDxTUM site, as well as on their YouTube channel.  It attempts to answer the question of why we do basic research by describing it as a necessary facet of human survival.

French version of the poster (small size)

The original version of this poster was created in France in 2014. It is the update of a previous poster designed in 2005 for the International Year of Physics. Since then, it has been translated to other langages. Additional language versions can be produced on request.

These slides were used to introduce three different musical acts that were influenced by the physics of the LHC at CERN, the Voyager missions to the edge of the solar system, and cosmic rays from the far cosmos.  The images might be interesting for anyone making a presentation.

Cards represent the elementary fermions and bosons. Each particle has its own card which displays some information about its properties: electric charge, mass, lifetime, sensitivity to the weak and strong interactions. The game rules are those chosen by Nature (with some simplification when...

The website provides a summary of how teachers, physicists, education staff and exhibit professionals designed and built a permanent exhibition about Fermilab's science and technology. The story we wrote to guide our work is posted as are descriptions and photos of all the exhibits.
