Steven Goldfarb

Steve is an experimental particle physicist at the University of Melbourne, working on the ATLAS Experiment at CERN. Within ATLAS, he has served as Muon Software Coordinator and Outreach Coordinator, and contributed to early studies in the search for the Higgs boson. Steve currently chairs the ATLAS Outreach Speaker Committee, coordinates the University of Michigan undergraduate programmes at CERN, serves as Curriculum Advisor for STEMarts Lab, and is an American Physical Society Fellow.

Steve first served as IPPOG Co-Chair from 2017 to 2019 alongside Hans Peter Beck, and was re-elected for a second term for 2020–2022, serving together with Pedro Abreu. He greatly enjoyed working with both co-chairs, as well as with the wider community of dedicated scientists, educators, and communicators that make IPPOG an effective and successful international collaboration. In 2026, Steve resumed his role as IPPOG Co-Chair for an additional mandate.

In his spare time, Steve frequently gives public talks on science, discovery, and international collaboration, co-wrote the popular TED-Ed “The basics of the Higgs boson” and, most importantly, fronts the world-famous Canettes Blues Band.
