We are excited to announce that Yiota Foka, coordinator of the Particle Therapy Masterclasses, is representing IPPOG at ICHEP 2024. This annual conference is an important event for the particle physics community, gathering experts from around the globe to discuss the latest advancements and research in the field. Yiota Foka's participation in ICHEP 2024 underscores IPPOG's commitment to advancing educational initiatives in particle physics. Her role at the conference involves not only representing IPPOG but also highlighting the significant impact of educational outreach programs like the Particle Therapy Masterclasses all over the world.
Overview of Particle Therapy Masterclasses
The Particle Therapy Masterclasses (PTMC) are a flagship project within the International Physics Masterclasses, coordinated by IPPOG. These masterclasses are organised by GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in collaboration with CERN and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. They focus on the application of particle physics in medical contexts, specifically in cancer treatment.
Objectives of the Particle Therapy Masterclasses
1. Educational Outreach: The primary aim is to educate high school students about the practical applications of particle physics in medicine. This includes understanding how particle accelerators are used in cancer therapy.
2. Hands-On Experience: Students participate in hands-on sessions where they use professional research tools and software, such as the matRad toolkit developed by DKFZ, to plan real-world cancer treatments. This immersive experience provides insight into the complexities of radiotherapy treatment planning.
3. Linking Research and Society: The masterclasses emphasise the direct impact of fundamental research on society. By showcasing the use of x-rays, protons, and carbon ions in treatment planning, the program highlights the translation of research into revolutionary medical applications.
