Intro
Particle physics outreach in Portugal is mainly pursued by LIP, the Laboratory for Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics. LIP is a nation-wide research institute with 3 nodes associated with the universities of Lisbon, Coimbra and Minho, and connections to other universities. It covers areas of experimental physics, collaborating in particle and astroparticle experiments at CERN and around the world, radiation detectors and technological developments for particle physics, and their application to societal issues. LIP also collaborates with theoretical groups around the country.

A divulgação da física de partículas é atualmente feita sobretudo pelo LIP - o Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas. O LIP é um Laboratório Associado de âmbito nacional, com 3 pólos associados às universidades de Lisboa, Coimbra e Minho, e ligações a outras universidades portuguesas. O seu programa cobre uma vasta área de física experimental, em que colabora em experiências de física de partículas no CERN e à volta do mundo, detetores de radiação e desenvolvimentos tecnológicos associados à física de partículas, bem como a sua aplicação a áreas de interesse societal. Para além disto, o LIP desenvolve atividades em colaboração com vários grupos de física teórica em Portugal.

Pedro Abreu
After graduating in Physics in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon in 1986, Pedro joined LIP the following year, setting foot at CERN for the first time to work on the DELPHI Experiment. In 1988 he began teaching at the Instituto Superior Técnico (Técnico ULisboa, IST) in Portugal and in 1991 earned the equivalent of a Master’s degree in Particle Physics from the same institution. Later Pedro earned a Ph.D. from IST based on his work in the DELPHI Experiment at LEP, all the while continuing his teaching engagements at IST. Pedro added science outreach to the mix and became the LIP Outreach Coordinator and the Portuguese representative in IPPOG (then EPPOG) in 2003. Over time, Pedro has become involved in several school outreach activities, conferences and public exhibitions. In 2010-2018 he was the President of the South and Islands Delegation of the Portuguese Physics Society and was responsible for the organization of the Physics Olympiads in the Delegation and its related national event. In 2012 he was nominated as the external relations person for the Physics Department of IST (the person responsible for dealing with high school visits and requests). He is one of the key instigators of the development and growth of the hugely successful Portuguese Teachers Programme at CERN and organizes the IPPOG International Masterclasses for high school students in Portugal. For this Pedro won the prestigious national prize "Prémio Ciência Viva Educação" em 2022. He is at the moment the President of the Portuguese Physics Society (mandate 2025-2027).

Depois da Licenciatura em Física na Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa em 1986, Pedro entrou no LIP em Maio de 1987, indo para o CERN pela primeira vez para trabalhar na experiência DELPHI/LEP. Em 1988 iniciou a carreira docente no Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade de Lisboa (Técnico ULisboa, IST) e em 1991 concluíu o equivalente a um Mestrado em Física na mesma instituição. Mais tarde concluíu o seu doutoramento no IST, baseado no seu trabalho na experiência DELPHI, enquanto leccionada no IST. Em 2003, Pedro adicionou a Divulgação às suas paixões, tornando-se LIP Outreach Coordinator e o representante de Portugal no IPPOG (E(P)POG na altura). Ao longo do tempo, Pedro involveu-se cada vez mais em atividades de divulgação científica associadas às escolas/ensino básico e secundário, eventos públicos em exposições e conferências. Em 2006 tornou-se representante de Portugal na rede EPPCN (apenas interrompido entre 2020-2025) e 2016 representante de Portugal no "Teachers and Students Forum at CERN". No período 2010-2018 tornou-se Presidente da Delegação Regional do Sul e Ilhas da Sociedade Portuguesa de Física, responsabilizando-se pela organização das Olimpíadas de Física na área da Delegação e pela etapa nacional em Lisboa (até 2015). No período 2012-2021 foi a pessoa de contacto com as escolas no Departamento de Física do Técnico ULisboa. Pedro é o Coordenador das Escolas de Professores no CERN em Língua Portuguesa desde o seu lançamento em 2007 e das Masterclasses Internacionais em Física de Partículas em Portugal desde o seu lançamento em 2005. Pedro ganhou o Prémio Ciência Viva Educação em 2022 pelo trabalho das Masterclasses e das Escolas de Professores.
Neste momento Pedro é o Presidente da Sociedade Portuguesa de Física (mandato 2025-2027).
