Every year on February 11th, we come together to celebrate the International Day of Girls and Women in Science, a day dedicated to recognising the important role women and girls play in science and technology.
The United Nations General Assembly established this day in 2015 to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. The initiative was a response to the global community's call for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in all spheres of life, particularly in the field of science and technology.
The International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG) joins this global movement to acknowledge the past, present, and future contributions of women in science. Despite the remarkable achievements of female scientists, gender disparities persist. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering a more inclusive scientific community.
To celebrate this important day, we organise International Masterclasses dedicated to girls interested in particle physics and moderated by Women Scientists.
Throughout history, women have made groundbreaking discoveries, often in the face of significant challenges. From Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, to contemporary leaders in particle physics, women continue to push the boundaries of human knowledge.
In IPPOG, we are committed to inspiring the next generation of female scientists. Our initiatives aim to provide opportunities for girls to engage with science from an early age, nurturing their curiosity and ambition.
Happy International Day of Girls and Women in Science!
