Ivane Javakhaishvili Tbilisi State University is the oldest and largest research university in Georgia. Since its founding in 1918, Tbilisi State University has established its academic reputation as a leader in diverse fields such as high energy physics, chemistry, agriculture, and the humanities under distinguished leadership of Georgian scientists such as Ivane Javakhishvili, Akaki Shanidze, Giorgi Tsereteli, Elepter Andronikashvili, Mate Mirianashvili, Vagan Mamasakhlisov, Givi Khutsishvili, Ilia Vekua, Niko Muskhelishvili, Victor Kupradze, Ivane Beritashvili. Leadership in these diverse fields has given TSU regional and international recognition as a center for research.
At present, TSU is successfully conducting research on vital scientific issues by collaborating with number of scientific groups from leading universities and research centers. In terms of international cooperation, the most noteworthy is TSU physicists’ participation in the project – ATLAS which is being carried out by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN, Geneva) as well as in the project – FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) organized by research center of Darmstadt. It must be noted that experiment ATLAS is the most costly and wide-scale experiment on the head-on collisions of protons of extraordinarily high energy. ATLAS will learn about the basic forces that have shaped our Universe since the beginning of time and that will determine its fate.
Becoming a Leading Research University - Tbilisi State University’s long-term goal is to develop the research capacity to compete successfully with research centers and universities worldwide by obtaining grants to investigate scientific topics and to achieve scholarly recognition in research publications and through presentations at international conferences. TSU researchers publish more than 800 scientific works every year, over 100 scientific projects are carried out.
In addition to maintaining high standards in scientific research achieved during the previous century, TSU also strives to be one of the leaders in developing innovative programs in education and the humanities as well. As one of the major providers of higher education in Georgia, the faculty of TSU believes that they are accountable for raising intellectual level of the younger generation in Georgia.
