IFIN-HH is one of the most important public R&D organizations in Romania. The institute addresses a spectrum of research and development activities in fundamental and applied research areas including Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics, Particle Physics, Atomic Physics, Life and Environmental Physics, Theoretical Physics, Nuclear Techniques, and Advanced Communication Systems. Featuring a variety of nation-wide-scoped facilities among which we can mention the Tandem Van de Graff Accelerator, the U120 Cyclotron, the Multipurpose Irradiation Facility Centre, the Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant, the institute is an important part of the Romanian research infrastructure.
To turn its strength to the best account, the institute concentrates its resources on along two directions: (a) to steadily develop a sound in-house capability to get and stay in the forefront of the current nuclear science and technology; and (ii) to substantively participate in the European collaborative endeavours centred on Large Scale Facilities such as GSI-Darmstadt (Germany), GANIL-Caen (France), CERN (Geneva), JINR (Dubna).
The Particle Physics Department (PPD) is a medium-size department with several researchers and technicians. It focuses on international involvement in high-energy colliders, hadron physics, computational simulations, and preparations for the next-generation experiments at ILC and CLIC. Its main activities are participation in large-scale experiments at CERN's LHC experiments and in the future at PANDA at FAIR. PPD is actively involved in ATLAS and LHCb at the LHC, with contributions to detector construction, technical work, and physics analysis. For, ATLAS and LHCb, GRID-based computing farms have been successfully operated and are contributing to the reconstruction, simulation, and data analysis. The PPG group is active with teaching and education at Faculty of Physics - "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University, Iasi and University of Bucharest.
