The Institute of Physics in Belgrade (IPB) was co-founded in 1961 by the University of Belgrade and the Government of Serbia and today represents one of the leading research institutions in the region. The principle activities of the Institute are oriented towards scientific research in theoretical and experimental physics and it has a permanent faculty of more than 100 research scientists organized into centers and laboratories. At a given time more than 50 graduate students are working at the IPB towards their Ph.D. 's.
The Institute of Physics has active research program in nuclear physics as well as in high energy physics (HEP). The Institute of Physics is a member of ATLAS Collaboration in CERN since 2003. Members of the HEP Laboratory of the Institute are involved in research topics considering processes and phenomena predicted by the Standard Model (SM) and searches for new physics beyond SM. The group is also active in educational and outreach program at the frontier of particle physics.
The Institute of Physics supports popularization of physics through the programme of Festival of Science and organizes additional information days for interested students. In collaboration with Serbian Physical Society it supports organization of national competitions in physics and publication of the journal "A Young Physicist".
