Physics research at UCL covers diverse fields including astrophysics and cosmology, atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter and biological physics as well as high-energy physics (HEP).
The HEP group comprises about 50 staff and 20 PhD students and carries out research including
- searching for new phenomena at the high-energy frontier at the ATLAS experiment in Geneva
- studying neutrino mass and oscillations at MINOS in the US
- looking for rare radioactive decays as part of the NEMO experiment under the French-Italian border
- hunting extremely energetic cosmic-ray neutrinos from the ANITA detector, suspended from a balloon circling Antarctica
- improving the way that the structure of the proton is determined by combining data from many sources
- designing electronics for the European X-Ray Free Electron LASER (EuXFEL) in Hamburg, Germany
- developing a new proton therapy cancer unit at University College Hospital
The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers a range of undergraduate degree programmes, with options to specialise in theoretical physics or astrophysics. Students following the four-year MSci course gain sufficient specialist knowledge in their courses and research projects to allow a seamless progression to postgraduate study and research.
There are PhD studentships available in many research areas.
