The University of Chicago prides itself on cross-disciplinary research. To promote interaction between disciplines, physics research is carried out in several multi-disciplinary institutes and centers: the Enrico Fermi Institute, the James Franck Institute, the Institute for Biophysical Dynamics, the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, the Computation Institute, and the new Kadanoff Center for Theoretical Physics. The Enrico Fermi Institute, itself devoted to interdisciplinary research, is where the experimental High Energy Physics research is carried out.

The University of Chicago High Energy Physics group is involved in diverse research activities, including the ATLAS Experiment at the LHC, the CDF Experiment at Fermilab, the E14 CP-Violation Experiment at JPARC, the Double Chooz neutrino oscillation experiment in France, advanced detector technologies, including Large-Area Picosecond Photo-Detectors Project, and more.
