Profs. Brian Meadows and Michael Sokoloff work together with four graduate students, a postdoctoral research associate, and two undergraduate physics majors on the LHCb experiment at CERN and the BaBar experiment at SLAC. Sokoloff, Meadows and the students are based in Cincinnati while the post-doc lives near Geneva, working daily at CERN where the LHCb detector is located. The BaBar and LHCb experiments have, as primary goals, the study of asymmetries between the interactions of matter and antimatter.

There are two other experimental high energy groups in the Physics Department at the University of Cincinnati (UC). One of these is led by Profs. Kay Kinoshita and Alan Schwartz who work on the Belle experiment based at KEK, a high energy physics laboratory in Japan. The other group, led by Professors Randy Johnson and Alex Sousa, studies properties of neutrinos. There is also a theoretical particle physics group led by Profs. Phillip Argyres, Alex Kagan, Rohana Wijewhardana , and Jure Zupan.

Jointly, these groups support approximately 8-10 PhD students, graduating 1-2 per year. They also support undergraduate physics majors. The Physics Department believes it is valuable for our majors to gain hands on research experience, participating in the publication of results where appropriate.
